Description:
Serial #165096, .303 Savage, 26" barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is one of approximately 800 or so, special order 1899 military rifles purchased during 1914 for the Montreal Home Guard, a private military organization formed by the officers of the Quebec Savings & Trust Co. in Montreal, P.Q. to resist a feared German invasion of Canada. The rifles were ordered with 26" barrels, accompanying bayonets with leather scabbards, and were rack numbered on the buttplate tangs. Additionally, many members had their names engraved on the receiver by a Montreal jeweler, as was done on this example. The metal of this exampple retains 98-99% of the original, lustrous blue finish with only some very minor fading at the muzzle and some small spots of plum-brown freckling on the buttplate (which is numbered “174" on the tang). The lever retains a commensurate amount of the original, bright color case-hardening with almost no fading or wear evident. The original owner’s name is engraved on the left side of the receiver: “JOHN C. PATERSON / MONTREAL HOME GUARD / 1914". The walnut buttstock, and grooved forend with handguard are likewise in excellent, almost unused condition, and exhibit only a handful of very minor handling marks in the original varnish finish. The rifle still has the original front sight hood, and has a flaked, but still serviceable original leather sling. After it became clear that Canada was safe from invasion, most of these rifles were converted to sporting rifles, and the survival rate for original examples is extremely low. This rifle is, without question, one of the finest still in existence. This gun is pictured on pg. 210 of "Allied Rifle Contracts in America" by Luke Mercaldo.
