Description:
DESCRIPTION:  Civil War Remington "Zouave" 58 caliber percussion rifle, actually referred to as "Harper's Ferry Pattern" in the official Army documents, and one of many government-contract rifles made for use by the Union troops. Similar to the 1841 Mississippi rifle, the Zouave is longer than the Mississippi and carries an overall length of 49" with a one-piece walnut stock, brass furnishings, steel barrel and ramrod, rifled barrel.

CONDITION: All steel surfaces have turned patina and have not been cleaned, just the way we like to see them. The brass was cleaned long ago and is starting tone away from being bright. Sub-inspector markings include an "L" on the top toe of the butt plate and on the lock plate, a "P" on the bottom tang forward of the trigger loop, a "U" on both barrel bands, and "R.K." on the left side of the barrel at the breech. The breech is also marked "1863" on top and has most of the "V P" marking visible. Barrel is marked "STEEL" on the left side at breech. Lock plate has the "Eagle" emblem above "U.S." as well as the 1863 date and the "REMINGTON'S ILION N.Y." in two lines. Left side of stock just ahead of the wrist is the "BH" cartouche of inspector Benjamin Hannis. Sights, swivels, and tulip head ramrod are all original and matching in condition to the rest of the rifle's finish. Bore retains decent rifling with some frost and black powder fouling. Stock shows numerous dings, dents, scratches and slight losses from field use. Barrel retains original bayonet lug but bayonet has long been separated from the rifle and is not included. Inside the patch box is found an extra nipple and a bullet worm to pull a stuck ball. Action is very strong with two very positive clicks, and the original nipple is still in very good condition. Overall a good representation of this Civil War percussion rifle model, grades NRA Antique Very Good, and will make a nice addition to your collection.  ** NOTE ** with the Remington plant in Ilion officially closed due to bankruptcy and being split off to several s, any and all original Ilion-made Remington firearms will skyrocket in value very soon.
