Description:
Also frequently referred to as a "Cemetery Gun".  Because surgeons and medical students could only legally dissect executed criminals or people who had donated their bodies to science, a trade in stolen corpses erupted. The cemetery gun was a dramatic way to discourage so-called "resurrection men." The gun would be mounted on a mechanism that allows it to spin freely. Cemetery keepers set up the  weapon at the foot of a grave with three tripwires around the grave. A prospective grave-robber, stumbling over the tripwire in the dark, would trigger the weapon—much to his own demise. This one is well marked. The lock plate is marked with a "GR" and a Crown.  Stock has the name "Marriott" branded into the bottom and the upper left side. The 2 halves of the stock are held together by riveted bindings.  This is one of the best ones I have seen  as they are usually in pretty tough shape. Definitely old and authentic and a very interesting and unique piece of early history.
