Description:
Howard M. Dove, Colt Master Engraver, died at age 52 in November 1994. A Green Beret veteran of the Vietnam War, he was one of the world's most renowned firearms engravers, and was one of only two men in the modern era to be employed by the Custom shop of both Colt Firearms and Winchester Repeating Arms at the same time. Known as the "Official Engraver" to the Colt Collectors Association, the Single Action Army he embellished for their 1992 brought the highest price ever paid for a new firearm sold at auctiojn. He engraved this beautiful 12 inch barrel Colt Buntline in 1982 while working for the Colt company. It remains today in new, unfired condition. Adding to its rarity, this is one of less than 400 Buntlines chambered for the .44 Special cartridge. The beautiful oak presentation case was custom made for this gun, and is extremely well finished. Because of his early demise, Howard Dove engraved Colts are extremely rare and difficult to find. This gun is signed "HOWARD DOVE, COLT ENGR." on the frame under the grips.
