Description:
The Model 70 is considered by many gun enthusiasts to be finest bolt action rifle ever made in the U.S. It has been used for everything from hunting to target shooting and has even seen military service as a sniper rifle alongside such famous rifles as the Springfield M1903A4, Lee-Enfield No. 4 Mk I(T), Mosin-Nagant M1891/30 Sniper, and Mauser Model 98k Sniper. Like the Springfield ’03, the Model 70 traces its lineage back to the original Mauser Model 1898, whose action design formed the basis of the Model 70’s predecessors, the Model 1917 and the Model 54. The .264 Winchester Magnum was officially announced by Winchester in 1958 and is one of a series of cartridges based on Winchester’s own .458 Win Mag case necked down. It has historical significance as it is the first American 6.5mm cartridge since the long defunct .256 Newton (whose bullet was actually .264” in diameter, not .256”) was announced back in 1913. The .264 Win Mag is a fine ultra-velocity round with the original factory load propelling a 140-grain bullet to a little over 3000 fps. It possesses exceptional long-range capabilities and ballistics superior to the classic .270 Winchester. It is very much an open plains and mountain cartridge. The hand loader has a wide choice of bullets available to them ranging from 85 grains up to the famous 160-grain projectile. As a general rule, the 100-grain projectiles are intended for deer and antelope, while the 140-grain ones are intended for elk and larger game. The 160-grain projectiles are intended for heavy game such as moose. Outside of hunting where quick follow-up shots may be required, care must be taken to allow for proper cooling of the barrel as the .264 Win Mag can be hard on it. Its performance and wide range of applications certainly outweigh this. This Model 70 is in good shape for its age (59 years as of 2020). The rifle has obviously been used as a hunting rifle, i.e. for its intended purpose, rather than as a safe queen. There is some slight bluing loss on the barrel and magazine floor plate. The buttplate screws are lightly rusted. The serial number was not properly stamped into the receiver but can still be read correctly. The stock bears most of the wear. The worst spot is at the top edge of the butt stock. The wood is discolored and the is a small chip missing (see pictures). The stock does not have any cracks. There are a few dents in the wood which could be steamed out. The bore is in excellent condition and has good rifling. The rifle is fitted with a nice Redfield Pursuit Target 4-16x40mm scope for long range shooting. The leather sling is also made by Redfield.
