Description:
Italian Model of 1891 Moschetto "Carbine" produced in 1936 by the Terni arsenal and chambered for the 6.5x52mm "Carcano" cartridge. The Moschetto is a carbine version of the Italian Model 1891 rifle, originally intended for use by the cavalry. Its use was later extended to other units. This family of rifles were commonly known as Mannlicher-Carcanos, being Mannlicher-type rifles with modifications by a team of designers headed by one Salvatore Carcano. In common with other Mannlicher rifles, it employed a magazine which was charged with a six round en-bloc clip, which remained in the magazine until all the cartridges had been discharged. The cavalry carbine featured a permanently fixed spike bayonet, which folded under the barrel when not in use. Three patterns of lock were used to secure the bayonet in place. The first used a sliding switch which had problems as it could be inadvertently unlatched while on horseback. To remedy this issue cavalry units would install lever which held the bayonet locked more securely. This was the second pattern. The third and final pattern made use of a self-locking push button. All most all of the previous locks were updated to the final pattern during the interim period between the world wars. This Italian 1891 Moschetto is in excellent condition and features the rare second pattern cavalry lock. The bore is bright and the action is smooth and locks into battery perfectly. The hardwood stock is in excellent condition with typical wear as seen in most surplus firearms. It has dents and dings but no cracks or stock repairs are visible. What is special about this rifle is the absence of any importation mark. In a market flooded with recent imports this is a great chance to get a rare piece of military history without having to deal with unsightly import marks.
