ON HOLD! S&W Model No. 2 Army Revolver in .32 Rimfire with Original Factory 5" Octagonal Barrel, 6 Shot Cylinder, and Rosewood Grips. There were a little more than 77,000 of these produced from 1861-1873. This one is in the 73,000 range and would have been made in the early 1870's just after the Civil War. Many No. 2 Army Revolvers ended up in the hands of Union officers during the Civil War. The early .32 Caliber Rimfire copper cartridges were waterproof and ideal for a soldier's life which was largely spent in the elements. These early cartridge revolvers were quite an innovation over the cap and ball pistols and revolvers from this era and Smith and Wesson held the patent for the bored-through cylinder aka the "Rollin White Patent" which effectively made this No. 2 Revolver about the largest cartridge revolver on the block aside from a handful of infringements and pinfires until about 1871 when the patent expired. Probably the most famous owner of this Model was Wild Bill Hickok who purportedly had one the day he was killed playing poker in 1876. Another famous owner who also died that year was General George Armstrong Custer. Custer had an ornate pair of Number 2 Armies which were a gift for his services as a hunting guide in the years before his demise at the Battle of Little Bighorn. Overall Condition of this example grades to NRA Antique Excellent with 85% original blue on barrel, 95% on the frame, 80% on the grips straps, and 75% thinning blue remaining on the cylinder. The hammer shows strong flashes of cases colors. Strong barrel address on the top rib and nice patent dates rolled around the circumference of the cylinder. The tip-up barrel latches tighty to the frame with no wobble or play. Very good screws and pins throughout. Sharp checkered knurlings on the hammer spur and trigger face. Everything cycles mechanically nicely and the bore is a very strong FINE+ with nice rifling and still bright. The rosewood grips are solid in Fine Condition with 95% original dark piano varnish intact. All original with matching numbers. Grips are numbered to the serial number on the bottomstrap of the frame. Frame, cylinder, and barrel have matching assembly code "6 * * ". See Photos. Complete and 100% original including cartridge ejector. Good solid example of one of the world's first cartridge revolvers. Antique, Pre-1898.
