Description:
***   SOLD   ***   William Rochester Pape of Newcastle-upon-Tyne was considered the “Purdey of the North” for the high quality and beauty of his guns. This gun certainly bears that out with its highly figured nitro Damascus barrels and beautifully sculpted rebounding hammers and action body. It has double triggers and extractors. The hammers sit below the shooter’s line of sight when cocked. The action and forearm iron including the release latch are nicely engraved. Serial number is 8018 indicating manufacture circa 1894 – 95. It is an upland wand at 5lb 14oz.   ***   The 29-1/2” highly figured nitro Damascus barrels are chambered for 2-3/4” shotshells and are choked perfectly for quail, grouse and woodcock. They have extractors, a top extension, and a raised solid flattop rib that is striated to reduce glare. The rib is inscribed “W. R. PAPE . NEWCASTLE . ON . TYNE . INVENTOR . OF . CHOKE . BORING.”  The right barrel is bored 0.629 with a constriction of 0.00 for Cylinder choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.032. The left barrel is bored 0.624 and has a constriction of 0.005 for a Light Improved Cylinder choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.032. The exterior finish of the barrels is in excellent condition. Like most Damascus barrels of the late Victorian era the bores show moderate pitting but these have outstanding wall thickness and were reproofed in London in 2012 with the historic pitting present.   ***   The Prince of Wales pistol grip stock and splinter forearm are handsomely figured and have crisp proper flat-sided checkering befitting a best gun. The forearm has a Deeley latch and sports an ebony forearm tip. There is an initial shield on the top of the wrist. Stock dimensions are 14-5/8” to a thin peaked horn butt plate by 1-3/8” by 2”. Cast off for the righthanded shot. The wood set shows some handling wear including some scratches and a small dent on the top of the comb; all easily repairable.   ***   Imagine yourself approaching a covey on a crisp fall morning, the dogs staunchly on point as you cock the hammers of this great handling 20 bore in anticipation of the flush! Don’t let that moment get away!  ***   Buyer is responsible for all shipping, insurance, and any other related charges. I give a 3-day non-firing inspection period and will only accept returns at buyer’s expense.
