Description:
Serial #2526, .32-40, 30" part octagon barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is a truly handsome rifle, built on a 44 1/2 action, that has retained 95-97% of a period added rust blue finish on the barrel with some fading along the edges, and silvering at the muzzle. A crisp “A.O. ZISCHANG SYRACUSE, N.Y." marking is present at the breech on the left barrel facet, and a small and unobtrusive import mark is present on the underside just ahead of the forend tip. Two barrel dovetails have been filled with blanks, and scope blocks have been fitted. The frame has delicate floral scrollwork engraving and retains 25-30% of the original color case-hardening, mostly towards the rear, with the balance having turned bright with traces of darker freckling in a few spots. The underlever has a finger spur, and is wood-filled at the rear. The mechanics are tight and functional, and the double-set triggers have a crisp let-off. The checkered walnut forend with schnabel tip is in fine shape with only a few minor handling marks in the lovely original oil finish. The buttstock condition matches the forend, and the hooked buttplate has developed a mottled brown tarnish. The rifle is not currently outfitted with sights. The owner's notes indicate that the rifle was once the property of Frank Lucas, a pharmacist from Webster, NY, and a friend of Ned Roberts. This is a beautiful Zischang Stevens, in excellent condition, and built by one of the great names in early American custom gunsmiths. FFL or C&R
