#7920, J & W (James & William) Tolley, 59 New Bond St., London. W: A large 12 Bore Fully Rifled Henry Jones Underlever Rebounding Hammer Game Rifle, Made about 1898, 26" Steel barrels with Rib Extension dolls head, A Full Length rib with 1 standing & 1 folding Platinum lined rear sights marked 50 & 100 yards, 3" chambers, Proved at the Birmingham proof house, Deeley & Edge pull down forend release, Percussion style fences, Trigger guard tang extended to a steel grip cap, No cheekpiece, Sling eyes, 11 lbs. 5 oz., 15" LOP over a 1" Silvers pad, The fully rifled bores are excellent with scattered light pitting but no deep problems, The rifling is square and sharp the entire way, The frame with surface blemishes but no pits, The steel barrels with original blue and surface blemishes but again no pitting, All the screws are excellent, The wood is very solid both fore and aft, The checkering remains at 60%, The inletting under the locks is excellent and totally free of any oil soak, No primer burn at the striker holes and a lot of case colors remain on the breech face. This is a solid rifle ready to be used and shot.
J & W (James & William) Tolley started business in 1859 in Birmingham, in the 1880's they set up shop with a retail store in London at 1 Conduit St. They made smoothbores, big game express rifles including double 4 bores. James Tolley died in 1916, and the firm was bought by Holloway & Naughton about 1919 as Tolley was recorded at Vesey Street where Holloway & Naughton occupied 10, 12 and 14 Vesey Street at about that time. In 1955 guns were no longer made under the J & W Tolley name. From 1932 to 1939 10 Vesey Street was occupied by R B Rodda & Co. The Holloway & Naughton name has been respected in British gunmaking since the early 19th century. During WWII the factory was destroyed in a bombing raid on Birmingham, all plans, blueprints, machinery and records were lost. In the early 1990’s, Andrew Harvison brought back this established name; they make a very nice O/U along with some nice SxS game guns. Check them out at hollowaynaughton.co.uk
