Description:
GORGEOUS, HIGH CONDITION 1886 SEMI-DELUXE TAKEDOWN .33WCF RIFLE, #1549XX, SHIPPED LATE IN 1918! According to The Winchester Handbook by George Madis, "Serial number 156599 was the highest number produced in standard production. It was shipped on Dec 8, 1920." He further states that parts left over were assembled into rifles as late as 1932 (parts clean-up). Looking at production figures, Winchester produced only 831 M-1886s in 1918. In fact the last year they produced over a thousand M-1886s was 1912 when they made 1,320. I called the Cody Museum on this one and got the following back on the call-in sheet (included with the rifle): "Rifle, .33 W, round barrel, plain stock, Pistol grip, Checkered, 1/2 magazine, Shotgun butt, Takedown, Shipped to J. A. Johnston of Pittsburg, Pa, Received in the warehouse on Sept 18, 1918, Shipped from warehouse on October 17, 1918." This special order rifle is in excellent plus condition retaining nearly all the bright factory blue on the barrel, magazine and receiver with only some slight edge wear and small scuffing on the forend cap and takedown ring ahead of the receiver- even the upper tang retains deep bright blue. At some time it was fitted with a period correct all steel Redfield receiver sight and matching Redfield marked dovetail filler blank. Being such a late production rifle I thought this might be mentioned in the factory letter, but sights are rarely mentioned. The stock and forearm are excellent with fine checkering. The bore is perfect. Some research might turn up some historical info on the original recipient of this fine special ordered Winchester, J. A. Johnston of PA. This is a really attractive, very late production smokeless powder 1886 is super condition.
