Description:
STEVENS IDEAL "RANGE MODEL" RIFLE No. 45 ON THE DESIRABLE AND STRONG 44 1/2 ACTION. This one is a true mystery! The caliber designation on the side of the barrel reads          " 22.  7 1/2."  It is a rim fire and I have spoken with very knowledgeable people in the field and consulted every book I have and can't find anything about the 22. 7 1/2. I fired a subsonic .22 LR low pressure round out of it and the case bulged somewhat in the front half. If the entire case had bulged, I'd say it took a larger rim fire shell than the industry standard .22 LR, so I'm assuming it is the chamber that is damaged. One very knowledgeable shooter/collector (expert on these things, actually) said that back in the day, one could buy "blank" .22 cartridges to fire behind breech seated .22 bullets for extreme target shooting. He thought that might be what this rifle is about. Anyway, the rifle is sound, but used. The receiver case colors have faded to gray and while there is some blue on the rear portions of the 26" half octagon barrel, mostly the barrel is gray also. The action is tight and screws are excellent. It retains the correct for this model tang sight and has a blade front sight. The serial number on the barrel (5XXX) matches the receiver number. The bore shows good rifling, but is dark and only fair to good. The forend is fine and the butt stock near excellent with correct Swiss butt plate. Interestingly, there is a true silver "moon with a face" nicely inletted into the right side of the stock- meaning unknown. I can't say much more about this one except that I've had it for nearly two years and kept scratching my head over it, trying to figure it out before putting it up for sale. I'm still baffled! I suppose that's what keeps this business and interest in all things classic/antique firearms intriguing.
