Description:
ON HOLD!  Nice example of a US Model 1841 Percussion aka the "Mississippi Rifle" after Jefferson Davis's Miss Regiment carried this model in the Mexican American War.  These were used by both the Union and Confederacy during the Civil War from 1861-65 and they were also extremely popular with
frontiersmen and settlers who moved into California and the Oregon Territory during the 1850's and 60's.  These were made by the Harpers Ferry, Remington, Tryon, Whitney, and Robbins & Lawrence.  This rifle is a Robbins & Lawrence that is dated 1850 and is still in its original configuration with 33" barrel in .54 caliber and original 5 groove rifling.  Many of these rifles that were used by the Union Army during the civil war were bored out to .58 caliber to accept standard minie balls as well as a number of alterations to the ends of their barrels for different bayonets.  This one is pure and unaltered with its original swivels and brass tipped ramrod which are often missing or replaced.  Brass patchbox has the threaded hole for the storing a spare cone/nipple.  Barrel is proofmarked  US over "JPC" which is the correct inspector initials for a Robbins, Kendall & Lawrence Mississippi rifle.  The stock has two cartouches including the famous WAT cartouche of William Anderson Thornton.  Most of us can't afford an original Colt Walker revolver but all the ones that went to the US Military have Thornton's cartouche.  To know that Thornton handled both of these models and that he used this same stamp to approve these rifle as he did for the Colt 1847 Walkers that went to Texas and Mexico is kind of special.   The buttplate is stamped "U.S." with a large number "54".  54th Regiment perhaps?  Overall condition grades to NRA Antique Very Good Plus.  The barrel has turned mostly to a smooth brown patina with traces of original browned finish and remnants of its shiny protected varnish in the protected areas along the wood line.  Brass has turned to a nice mustard patina with some stains on the front band.  The collector I got this from liked to fire all of his antique muzzleloaders and I suspect this is from black powder residue when he was reloading.  At any rate, it tells you what kind of shape this rifle is in because the bore is bright with strong lands and grooves.   The wood shows minor handling marks and a few minor dings but is in very good+ condition and has never been cleaned or sanded.  The cartouches are proof of that as they are both sharp and legible.  Lock works nicely as well.   This rifle is in well above average condition for a 170 year old Model 1841 Mississippi.  $60.00 shipping via USPS Priority Mail in Lower 48.  Antique, No FFL required.
