Description:
The Remington Model 14 was for many years the standard American pump-action hunting rifle. It was originally designed in 1908 by John Pederson, the famed inventor of the Pederson device for use with the ’03 Springfield military rifle. The Model 14 was intended to be a competitor to the Winchester Model 1894 lever action rifle as well as a manually operated alternative to Remington’s own Model 8 semi-auto rifle designed by John M. Browning. A pump-action rifle was somewhat of an odd choice at a time when lever-action rifles were still preferred, but the Model 14 sold fairly well and was produced between 1912 and 1935 before being replaced by the Model 141 (much like its counterpart the Model 8 which was replaced by the Model 81 in 1936). The most unique feature of the Model 14 was its magazine tube which had a special spiral design at certain points along the tube’s length. This design allowed the use of spitzer type bullets by keeping the pointed tip off center from the primer of the next cartridge in front of it, thereby preventing any magazine detonations during recoil. The ability to use spitzers gave the Model 14 a definitive edge over the Winchester ’94. Another interesting feature of the Model 14 is that the magazine tube moved with the pump, i.e. it is not fixed in place as on a lever gun. One of the best features of the Model 14 was that it was a takedown rifle, the large knurled screw on the left hand side being withdrawn to allow the trigger group and buttstock to be pulled from the bottom of the rifle. This Model 14 is chambered for the .32 Remington cartridge. The .32 Remington, although no longer popular, is still produced by Precision Cartridge Inc., the ammo being found through Graf and Sons. Reloading supplies can also be found through G&S. The .32 Remington is effective on the same range of game as the .32 Winchester Special it was designed to compete with. The rifle shown is in fair condition for its age. According to the barrel code on the lower left-hand surface of the barrel, this Model 14 was made in August of 1927 (“WU”). There are some unusual patterns of pitting on the left hand side of the receiver and barrel. The pattern suggests the rifle was stored in something, a cloth perhaps. The pitting on the forward section of barrel is the usual kind. Overall, the finish is well worn in several places as would be expected for a well-used hunting rifle. The stock was shortened and a rubber butt pad was added. A Marble rear peep sight has been added but is not tall enough to be used over the original rear sight. Either the rear sight elevator would have to be removed to allow the rear of the sight to sit at barrel top level or the whole rear sight assembly would need to be removed. It’s surprising that the length of the threaded “stalk” for elevating and lowering the peep sight isn’t longer that it is. Mechanically, the rifle functions just fine. The trigger pull is relatively short. The front sight blade is in fine shape. In contrast to the external portions of this rifle, the bore is in near mint condition. There is no rust or pitting present. It would be very accurate. The Model 14 is one of the best rifles ever built and is a very underrated firearm.
