Description:
This is a third version medal (without dates) that depicts Queen Victoria on the obverse, and helmeted Britannia holding a victory wreath over a column of marching troops with a pre-dreadnought battleship in the distance. The medal is numbered and identified along the edge: “6476, Pte. W. COOKE K.R.R.C." (King’s Royal Rifle Corps), and the original red, navy blue, and orange ribbon is in fine shape, slightly frayed at the ends, but stabilized with cello-tape. The ribbon is framed by six clasps: Laing’s Nek, Transvaal, Relief of Ladysmith, Orange Free State, Tugela Heights, and Cape Colony. Included with the medal are copies of Cooke’s Medal Roll entries from 1901 and 1902, however, no further information on him has yet been found. This is a splendid piece of Boer War memorabilia, and would make a great addition to any collection of British militaria.
