Description:
CLEARFIELD COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA Full Stock Antique LONG RIFLE by ALLEMAN

Both Maker and Owner Marked!

Here we present an antique Clearfield County, Pennsylvania Full Stock Percussion Long Rifle by Albert B. Alleman, made circa the mid-19th Century. Alleman (16 May 1849-8 August 1908) was a gunsmith and tobacconist at his address on 2nd Street (West side) in Clearfield, Pennsylvania, the county seat of the same name according to James Whisker.

This rifle features a long, slender design with a full-length maple stock fitted with brass hardware from muzzle cap to butt plate. The straight lines of the medium weight octagonal barrel and straight forestock transition suddenly and narrow at the wrist before sloping gently off with no additional rise to the comb of the butt stock, making this substantial rifle look almost petite. Very well-balanced. Double set triggers. The right side of the butt stock features a large brass patchbox held by seven screws and a distinctive open finial. Carved in cheek rest on the left. The percussion hammer is dramatically curved and sports a long and exaggerated spur. Many features of this rifle speak of great influence from nearby Bedford County.

The left buttstock has been carved and hand engraved with floral scroll. The side plate is hand inscribed with “H.A. XHERLOCK (Sherlock)”, possibly Herbert A. Sherlock (1858-1935) of Crawford County, PA. The muzzle is decorated with 8 stars and 14 punched dots between each star. “ALLEMAN” is marked on the rear sight for Albert B. Alleman.

The overall condition is very good. The action is strong, and the bore is bright. Minor repairs to the stock that kept this rifle solid and well-preserved for our benefit as well as future generations. Here is a fantastic rifle complete with maker’s mark and the mark of a past user and perhaps the original owner.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 42-1/8 inches.

Caliber: .42
