Civil War US SPRINGFIELD M1855 MAYNARD Percussion Pistol-Carbine with STOCK
1 of ONLY 4,021 Made at SPRINGFIELD for CAVALRY
Here we present a very desirable antique Springfield Armory Model 1855 Pistol-Carbine, made in the second production year in 1856, five years prior to the outbreak of the American Civil War. Only 4,021 of these were manufactured, making them very rare, especially considering that many would have been lost during the war. The concept was for all U.S. Army troops to have a common caliber so that logistics would be simplified. Having a (massive) pistol that cavalry could use while mounted, or carbine by attaching a stock when on foot, would grant a soldier versatility on the battlefield. In theory these were great ideas, but due to a slow rate of fire, less than stellar accuracy, and awkward handling characteristics, the pistol/carbine combination did not make the cut. In addition, the Maynard tape priming system preformed weakly. Although, what may have been considered as “flawed” at the time, has made them a particularly desirable collector's item today.
There were only three models of handguns manufactured at Springfield, the Model 1911, Model 1817 flintlock and, of course the Model 1855, as we present here. The chosen caliber was .58, and it utilized the cutting-edge cone-shaped Minié ball with the hollow base instead of ball. The new Maynard tape system was interesting. Instead of directly priming the nipple by hand for each shot, the user would simply install a roll of paper percussion caps, and a single cap would be exposed, sheared and carried by the hammer to detonate on the nipple. Of course, the standard rifle percussion caps could also be used. The ramrod is captive on a swivel, so that it was not easily lost in the field, with a hollow tip for pushing the Minié ball. These very interesting weapons were very much utilized on both sides during the Civil War and are highly valued in the collector’s market today.
This example has the correct standard markings and features and is dated "1855" on the barrel tang and "1856" on the lock. The pommel cap is stamped "4," and a "10" is marked on the stock collar. “US” is stamped atop the stock’s buttplate.
The overall condition is fine. The action is strong and tight. The bore is in very good shape with nice rifling. The stock seats firmly against the grip. This is an outstanding Springfield Model 1855 with the stock, that most surely saw action during the American Civil War!
