RARE Antique ROBERT McCORMICK 1798 US Government Contract FLINTLOCK Musket
Early US Musket Manufactured Between 1798 and 1801!
Here we present an antique Robert McCormick Contract Flintlock Musket made between 1798 and 1801 in Northern Liberty, Pennsylvania.
McCormick was an Irish immigrant who leased the Globe Mills near Philadelphia starting in 1798. Here he manufactured muskets and pistols on contract with the U.S. government. The impending threat of war with France resulted in contracts being issued in 1798 for the manufacture of military arms by private American contractors. The Secretary of the Treasury, Oliver Wolcott, under the Act of July 5th, 1798, made 27 different U.S. Contracts for a total of 40,200 stands of the French 1763 Charleville pattern musket. This was the basis for the U.S. Model 1795. McCormick received the second largest contract calling for 3,000 muskets at $13.40 per stand. Records also point out that he delivered into the Schuylkill Arsenal 2005 muskets between 1798 and 1800, probably on this very contract. McCormick also delivered around 600-925 to the State of Virginia. He was unable to complete his contracts because he, after struggling financially, was thrown in debtor's prison in 1801. James Haslett, who was one of his employees, finished out his 1799 contracts and later ran the Virginia Manufactory.
The overall condition is very good. The action is strong and tight. The bore is smooth and in good condition. “MCCormick” can be read on the lock. What could be read as “AC” is hand carved into the left side of the butt stock. The stock overall is solid and in great shape. Here is a prime example of a flintlock militia musket from the practically newborn United States!
