The 40.5" round .71 caliber rifled barrel has a fine bore with strong rifling. All metal is bright with light staining. The stock is good with the expected issue dents and dings and a couple of areas of wood loss at the ramrod channel. The barrel is numbered “1025" on the left flat. Above that, are two proof marks. “1843" is in front of the bolster with an S proof forward of that and “MR" on the bottom flat. The barrel tang is marked “Mle 1842" with a script T to the rear. The back-action lock is marked “Mre Rle de Mutzig" (Royal Manufactory of Mutzig). The stock has the round “touch mark" on the right buttstock (mostly indistinct) with MUTZIG stamped next to it toward the butt plate. The left butt, about 1" above the butt plate, is numbered 1025, the same as the barrel. Many of the smaller parts also have inspection stamps. The action functions correctly. This is a very nice example of the French Model 1842T percussion rifled musket. 4,850 French muskets were imported for the Civil War. This may be one. SOLD Antique: Yes |
