Description:
Antique EVANS NEW MODEL Lever Action MAINE Made “CARBINE MODEL” Rifle

1 of 4,000 SCARCE 28-Round Repeater

Here we present an antique Evans New Model “Carbine” Rifle produced circa 1877-1879 by the Evans Repeating Rifle Company of Mechanics Falls, Maine. Frequently referred to as “one of the most novel repeating rifles of the 19th century”, this .44 caliber centerfire carbine was manufactured between 1873 and 1879, with a total of 12,200 Evans rifles and carbines made, with 4,000 being the “Carbine” model. The New Model rifle and carbine, which is not serialized, utilized a revolving type magazine with a full capacity of 28, .44 caliber metallic rounds loaded through the butt of the 30” long round barrel. The hammer is mounted on the underside of the frame, just ahead of the breech lever and was manually cocked. The frame is rounded at the top and has no cut outs on the side. The forend fits square to the receiver front while the dust cover sits over the loading aperture.

The Evans repeating rifle enjoys the distinction of being the only mass-produced firearm ever attempted in the state of Maine during the 19th Century. It also holds the greatest capacity of any repeating rifle ever produced and marketed in the United States.

The overall condition is very good. The action is strong and tight. The bore is in good shape for its age, clean with sharp & clear rifling. A solid stock is what you’d expect from an Evans, and this example does not let us down. Great blue finish. The front sight is missing a small insert. This is a great example of one of the best alternatives to the Winchester in the 1870s!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 22 inches.

Caliber: .44 Evans
