Double Barrel COLT Made in 1886
Here we present an antique Colt Model 1878 Double Barrel Hammer Shotgun, manufactured in Hartford, Connecticut in 1886. The Model 1878 was made from 1878 to 1889, with approximately 22,683 guns manufactured. These double barrel shotguns were an exposed hammer double gun that competed closely with high-end Parkers. The Colt Model 1878 Double-Barrel Hammer Shotgun is considered to be, if not the finest, one of the finest American double-barrel shotguns ever made. Manufactured from 1878-1889, the Model 1878 Shotgun was the highest priced item in the Colt line and was available in almost any grade as a special order item. This double trigger shotgun is a 12 gauge solid rib with 25 inch barrels. This shotgun’s barrels appear to have been slightly shortened with both having cylinder bores.
The overall condition is fair. The actions are strong all around. The barrel assembly has been replaced and the bores are pitted throughout. There is a bit of movement at the face of the breech. “COLT’S PT F.A. Mfg Co.” is engraved on both locks. The stock remains solid. A gun that has been there and done that and would look fantastic in a display!
