Description:

RARE “2D QUAL’TY” SMITH & WESSON No. 1 Revolver

Kittredge & Co. Retailer Marks & Factory Letter

Here we present an antique Smith & Wesson Number 1 Second Issue Revolver, made circa 1868. The No. 1 was Smith & Wesson’s first metallic cartridge firearm. It utilized the idea of the “bored through cylinder”, which was patented by Rollin White and subsequently exclusively licensed by Smith & Wesson. This concept has forever changed revolving firearms design, and is the same idea used in revolvers today.

This one is one of those very rare examples that was marked “2D QUAL’TY” to designate it as a factory second for whatever deficiency it might have that would not pass quality control. In this case, the blemish was almost certainly the small divots in the bottom of the frame on the right side. These appear to have been there prior to the factory applying the silver plate finish. As per the included factory letter, this revolver was originally purchased by William Patton of Springfield, Massachusetts on August 15, 1865. Patton was very likely a local and may have even worked at Smith & Wesson. He purchased 5 No. 1 2D Quality revolvers. This revolver is also marked by the Kittredge & Co. Did Patton sell them to Kittredge? As the letter states, there is really no way to know, but it is very interesting nonetheless. Examples of this revolver with either marking are rare, much more with both of them one on top of the other!

The top of the barrel is marked “SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD, MASS”. Both sides of the barrel lug have the rare markings “2D QUALITY” as well as the Kittredge retailer marking over top, making it very difficult to read, which was likely the point. Make sure to visit our to get a close, clear picture.

The overall condition is fine. 60% of the original blue finish remain on the barrel. 85% of the silver plate remains. The markings are clear and legible. Serial numbers match. The rosewood grips are in near fine condition, showing little to no wear. The bore is in good shape. The action on this revolver is excellent. This historical Smith & Wesson No. 1 Revolver that started it all comes with two rare markings and a S&W factory archive letter to confirm it all!
