#936, Manton & Co. Gun Makers to H.R.H. The Duke of Edinburgh, K.G. London & Calcutta: A large 10 Bore Henry Jones Underlever Non-Rebounding Hammer Fully Rifled Game Rifle with 26 1/4" Damascus barrels, A Full length nicely matted rib with 3 folding Platinum lined rear sights marked 100 - 200 & 300 yards, Proved at the London proof house, 2 7/8" Chambers, Lever release forend fastener, Percussion style fences, Frontal sliding hammer locks on half-cock, Trigger guard tang extended to a steel grip cap, No cheekpiece, Sling eyes, 10 lbs. 4 oz., 14 3/8" LOP over a 1/3 checkered steel buttplate, The absolute strong point to this 10 bore is the condition of both bores, Both remain in excellent plus condition from throat to muzzle, They are as shiny as new and totally free of any graying, The rifling is as sharp as new, On a scale of 1 to 10 I would give them a 9 - 9.5, The Damascus barrels have what I believe is original browning and it remains at 80% with some surface blemishes but overall very light, The barrel striking remains near perfect, All the screws are very good, The wood is solid both fore and aft, There is a start/stop crack that goes around at the toe of the stock, It appears to remain very solid, The checkering remains at 55-60%, The inletting under the locks is excellent and totally free of any oil soak, Nice lock work, No primer burn at the striker holes and a lot of case colors remain on the breech face. This is a solid rifle with superb barrels and excellent plus bores. To quote Mr. Geoffrey Boothroyd "Few people would dispute that the most famous name in the history of British gunmaking is that of Manton". Manton in this era called the 8,10 & 12 bores as "Big Game" rifles; the 450, 500 & 577's were called "Express Rifles" and the 400 & 470 as "High Velocity" rifles.
There is no argument that the most famous name in the history of English gunmaking is Manton. The brothers John and Joseph are credited for the development of the modern shotgun. Joseph Manton was considered the most inventive brain in the firearms field of his period. At one time Thomas Boss and James Purdey were employed by Joseph Manton, also William Bishop of Westley Richards, Joseph Brazier of lock fame and Charles Lancaster all were influenced by Joseph Manton. Manton & Co. was started in Calcutta in 1825 and was still dealing in Big Game Rifles, Winchester, Mauser, FN, Smith & Wesson, Browning A5's and Webley well into the 20th century. They were at 116 Jermyn Street in London. This gun was proved in London.
