Comments : Peter Nelson is arguably the finest of all gunmakers. Having been brought up through the ranks of James Purdey & Sons, then moving to another iconic gunmaker, Hartmann & Weiss. P.V. Nelson guns are the much sought-after possessions of a few wealthy collectors. and became famous in gunmaking circles for their superlative quality and outstanding artistic decoration. This example, bearing serial number 1188 is believed to be the only 16 bore side-by-side Peter Nelson made. This magnificent sporting firearm has remained in the care of its original custodian until now. The magnificent Alligator custom presentation case was handmade by American custom case maker Mr. Marvin Huey, tools are likely Mike Marsh. The sporting gentleman from the SC Low Country enjoyed the stewardship of this shotgun in the superb gunrooms at his homes at Brays Island & Cherokee Plantations. Annually maintained by Master Gunsmith Walter Eisserer, former Griffin & Howe gunsmith from 1964 to 1968, moving on to work for himself gaining a stellar reputation caring for many important fine sporting firearms collections in the USA. P.V. Nelson guns are typically not often available, so this opportunity should not to be missed by anyone who places significant importance on superlative quality in the fine art of gunmaking. Nelson started his career in the 1950s as an actioner at James Purdey & Sons. From there, he worked on guns for Hartmann & Weiss. In 1989, he went out on his own and built guns under his own name. He retired from gunmaking in 2012. Regarded as one of the most respected gunmakers of his generation. The Queen Elizabeth II, Golden Jubilee Gun was one of the last sporting firearms he built, Griffin & Howe sold this fine piece in 2012 for £190,000.00GBP, ($250,000.00USD). Nelson built around 84 guns in all. Nine clients commissioned these guns; two clients ordered around 60 of them. I believe a few of these guns have changed hands over the years, but it was always done with just a phone call. These guns were not advertised anywhere or on display at a gunshows or in a gunshops. Take a look at the craftsmanship of the SXS shown here, you can see why. Serial # 1188 is superbly engraved by UK Master Engraver Keith Thomas, who is currently engraving a 'Flight' of eight Boss & Co over/under shotguns for Griffin & Howe.
