The antique military weapon bears an 1883 cartouche on its left wrist. The high-arched breechblock bears the stamping “US MODEL 1873” at the hinge. Stamping is clear. Lockplate markings show the spread-winged eagle with the “U.S. SPRINGFIELD / 1873” forward of the hammer. Stock shows inspector stampings of a fancy script initial “P” within a circle on the underside of butt near trigger guard tang. Barrel shows that a bayonet has been installed at some time in the weapon’s life. Light patina on infantry rifle’s 32-5/8″ barrel, mostly front third.
