Description:
FINE EARLY AMERICAN REVOLUTIONARY WAR GEORGE III TOWER SHORT LAND PATTERN 1769 FLINTLOCK MUSKET IN ORIGINAL CONDITION. Main type used in all the major battles of the Revolutionary War readily identified by the single lock plate pin behind the hammer and the handsome hammer with curled cock finial as opposed to the later pattern 1779 with two pins and the notched hammer finial. Wonderful all original condition. 42” smoothbore .75 caliber barrel with Royal Ordnance proofs and the barrel maker’s London Company of Gunmaker’s Proof “*/IW” for John Walker, contractor to Ordnance, often seen on these early examples. Lock plate engraved “TOWER” in a shield behind the hammer and Royal Cypher “CROWN/GR” in front with the “CROWN/BROAD ARROW” Board of Ordnance proof below the pan. Stock with well struck Royal Ordnance Storekeeper’s cartouche on the right side of the butt. Superior condition with the original dark patina on the lock and barrel. Lock with all the original parts and side plate screws. Beautiful brass mounts with lovely old unpolished even patina. Stock with all the original finish with no repairs or restorations which is very rare for this model. Used by the British Regulars as well as the Loyalist Militias with captured arms used by American forces as well particularly after Saratoga where many were surrendered. Exceptional and historic early Revolutionary War Brown Bess.
