Description:
J.P. MOORE & SONS Antique CIVIL WAR P-1853 ENFIELD Rifle-Musket .58 Caliber

NYC Sub-Contractor for the Colt Firearms Company

Here we present an antique Enfield Pattern 1853 Three Band Rifle-Musket, made in 1863 by J.P. Moore & Sons in New York City. Only a couple thousand are estimated to have been made by Moore. The Pattern 1853 was the British Military Ordnance Board’s choice for adoption as the primary long arm in 1853. It was considered the apex European military gun of that time, introduced by the British War Department after several studies to improve the calibers and the dimensions of the previous models. The Enfield 1853 rifle-musket was also used by both the North and the South in the American Civil War and was the second most widely used infantry weapon in the war, surpassed only by the Springfield Model 1861 Rifled Musket. The Confederates imported more Enfields during the course of the war than any other small arm, buying from private contractors and gun runners. It has been estimated that over 900,000 P53 Enfields were imported into America and saw service in every major engagement of the war. This one was of American manufacture, using parts imported from Europe as well as parts made stateside, very similar to how Eli Whitney Jr. made his run of the Enfield.

The lock is marked for Moore’s company with a primitive federal eagle atop a patriotic shield motif with an “M” for Moore’s inside. The center of the lock is dated 1863. The butt plate is marked “J.R.A.”, very likely the soldier’s initials.

The overall condition is Good. The action is as strong as ever! The bore is bright with sharp rifling. The stock shows signs of use appropriate to age and experience. A rare piece of Civil War infantry hardware!
