The Winchester-Hotchkiss rifle was first conceived by Benjamin B. Hotchkiss in 1875 and by 1877 he had four US patents on the design which was sold to the Winchester company in early 1877. This was Winchester’s first bolt action rifle and their first firearm with a magazine fed from the butt stock. It has a rotating magazine cut-off which allows the shooter to close off the magazine to conserve ammunition and load single rounds for slow fire until the enemy was close. Then the magazine could be opened to access the full 6-shot capacity of the firearm. These were primarily meant to be military weapons though the US Ordnance Department was slow to move away from the single shot trapdoor rifles and carbines that were also in .45-70 GOVT. These were acquired in relatively small numbers by both the US Army and Navy. There were contracts for military rifles and carbines the world over: from Japan, China, and Siam in the Far East, to various countries in South America. This one lacks any federal US inspection markings but there is a “7” marked into the top of the comb of the stock. The overall condition is very good. Original blue finish. The action is excellent. The bore is in nice shape with strong rifling. This is a very neat rifle and represents some firsts for Winchester! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 24 inches. Caliber: .45-70 Government Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail!
