Description:
#0875 Emerson & Silver Mfg Model 1860 Lt. Cavalry Sabre w/scabbard, dated 1864 and stamped with the usual JM government inspectors mark of which there were SIX who used these initials …but only one was very active in 1864, that being John Maggs. It is marked “JM” in several places, at the throat of the blade, the pommel, and also on the drag of the scabbard. Overall, the blade has the leather throat washer, most of a thinning blade luster with some mottled staining in some spots, nicks and dings on the blade edge, and some light to pitting toward the point. The scabbard is near perfect with a smooth even brown patina, no dents at all, and having just some light minor freckle pitting on the drag. The original grip leather wrap and brass wire are in MUCH better condition than usually found on a battle used 1864 dated sabre (about 99% intact in this case), and this looks just to have been a sabre that saw use in the last part of the Civil War, but not in a heavy combat area. The scabbard fits this blade very well and has the same inspector marks so they probably always has been a pair. The Emerson & Silver company was probably the third largest domestic sabre supplier to the Northern side (after Ames and Roby), and if some Civil War buff wants a VERY decent representative, war dated, and maker-marked sabre, this well might fit the need. Overall VG+ $695.
