BEATTIE 20 DAMASCUS Here is a very rare, early 20 bore gun by James Beattie. It is an under-lever cocking gun which he registered a patent for in 1876. He dubbed his invention the "Acme," but it was more commonly referred to as the Spiral Spring Woodward, featuring a top safety and a rebounding lock. The ingenious and simple mechanism housed a spring, a piston and a firing pin in a tube mounted on a "sidelock-like" lock-plate. The under-lever forced back the piston and spring until they were caught by the sear. Beattie marketed his Model 2 as "The Only Hammerless Gun. While that claim may have been a slight exaggeration, his Model 2 was certainly one of the very first. His patent was licensed to many other makers, among them James Purdey & Son. It's not known how many 20 bore guns he built on this patent, but it can't have been more than a handful. This particular example has 28" Damascus barrels with original proofs and 2 1/2" chambers. Barrels are marked Not for Ball. The bores are shiny, clean, and free of dings. It is choked improved cylinder in both barrels. On the lock-plates is the maker's name, along with simple border engraving. The action features top-mounted cocking indicators. The nicely figured buttstock has no cracks but has some minor impressions in the sides of the butt. The fore-end is of the pull-off type, and has a silver finial. The stock measures DAC 1-5/8", DAH 2-1/4", LOP 14 1/2" over heel and toe plates. The cast is neutral. The weight is 5 lbs 8 oz. A graceful and fascinating little double from the very early days of the hammerless era. No FFL required for this 1885 antique SxS that can ship to your door.
