Description:
Pictured on page 237 of Sutherland and Wilson's "The Book of Colt Firearms", this gun, serial # 179, is an excellent example of this model. It retains some original blue finish, has no replacement parts, and is in perfect working condition. Adding to its desirability, this gun is recorded by Colt as a ".42 Stetson" caliber instead of ".44 Rimfire", which is rare and only found in the very earlist production run. This gun is also one of the approximately 425 made with the 1851 Navy size grips, the balance of the 7000 having the larger 1860 Army size grips. And finally, it is one of the few 1872's stamped "COLTS PATENT" on thre frame, instead of with the patent dates. Since these open-tops fired the same cartridge as the Henry and Winchester 1866 rifles, they were immediately very popular on the southwestern frontier and received hard usage, and therefore have a lower survival rate than normal. The majority were finished in nickel plate, and it is rare to find a blue finished example with any original finish remaining. It comes with a factory authentification letter dated July 16, 2004.
