Description:
Bentwood cedar swinging baby's cradle decorated with painted designs featuring a bentwood form constructed from six cedar boards, with Northwest Coast style designs painted on the exterior. The sides and top of the cradle are made from a single large piece of wood. The side board is tapered near the top and rounded at that end, with a tapered segment near the bottom end. This shae was achieved by cutting deep grooves along the interior width of the side board, 15 at the top and 4 others to form the tapered segments. A separate foot board is attached and 4 other boards are nailed along the bottom to support the baby. The bottom has two wide gaps, one near the center and another near the head. A crouching bear painting on the right side, facing towards the top, with a pair of feather like floral designs of black, red and turquoise blue. On the other side is a killer whale, with a mask like human face behind its head and three feather like floral designs. This black, red and turquoise design wraps around the bottom edge and extends onto the foot board. The top and bottom ends of the cradle each have two pairs of holes for attaching the two suspension ropes. Twelve other holes are drilled near the side edges of 3 bottom support boards. A rope threaded through these holes forms two rows of loops, with three along each bottom edge, used to secure the child with a separate lashing.
