Description:
This is a beautiful piece of firearms history from the late 1700's / early 1800's.  This is a .45 caliber flintlock brass cannon barrel pocket pistol made by I. Parr of England.  The proofs on the bottom of the barrel appear to be from the Birmingham proof house.  This beautiful pocket pistol features brass and steel construction, a flintlock action, hand engraving, a screw-off cannon style barrel, and a European Walnut pistol grip with very fine silver wire inlay on 3 sides.  While this was a very popular and simple lock design popular during this time period, this example shows very fine craftsmanship that goes above and beyond 99% of the pistols of this style you will see.  The screw-off barrel is 3 and 1/8th" inches long and features a ring at the muzzle, 3 steps down, and a smooth bore.  The frame is made of brass but with steel internals along with a steel hammer, triggerguard, trigger, frizzen, and small steel plate inlaid into the top of the frame ahead of the frizzen for the frizzen to hit when it flips forward when fired.  Had this little plate not been put in place, the brass would not stand up to the frizzen hitting it more than a few dozen times.  As you can see from the pictures, the brass frame and the steel parts are all hand engraved to varying degrees and the hammer has a very nice structural design.  The pistol grip on this pistol is a work of art.  Both sides and the top of the grip have beautiful silver wire inlays in them that are fit to perfection.  This could only be accomplished by a very skilled artisan gunsmith.  The grip is in excellent condition overall, free from any cracks, chips, or repairs.  The flintlock action on this pistol is in perfect working order with strong springs and tight joints/hinges.  The hammer has good threads for the jaws and is rock-solid at half-cock and full-cock. The frizzen snaps into place nicely in the open or closed position, and the trigger breaks nicely with a medium pull.  The pan is nice and clean with an open flash hole and the powder chamber behind the barrel is clean.  Despite being more than 200 years old this pistol would still function perfectly if loaded up today!  If you have been looking for a display-worthy antique pistol that will catch anyone's eye, this English I Parr Cannon Barrel Flintlock pistol would be a superb choice.
