Description:
This is a beautiful un-attributed British Pepperbox revolver in .40 caliber, most certainly made in Birmingham or London.  Completely unmarked other than the British proofs on the barrel cluster, this pepperbox displays very fine craftsmanship and is in remarkable all-original condition.  This double-action pepperbox has six .40 caliber cap and ball barrels 3" inches in length, a top-mounted bar-hammer, and a hand-engraved rounded steel receiver and grip frame with smooth European Walnut handles.  The whole pistol is color case-hardened, with lots of original bright colors still showing on all of the metal parts, particularly in the protected areas.  As you can see in the pictures, there is varying degrees of fine-line scroll engraving on all of the metal parts, and all of the hand-made screws are timed and shaped to the contours of the gun.  The bores in all 6 barrels are bright and clean, free from any pitting or damage, and all of the original nipples are in excellent condition.  Between each nipple there is a slot for the hammer to rest, allowing the pepperbox to be carried safely with all 6 barrels loaded.  The original grips on this weapon are in excellent condition overall.  Both Walnut grip panels are perfectly fit to the frame of the gun and tight with no wiggle.  Both grip panels are free from any major dings or damage.  Both the diamond-shaped escutcheons and the grip screw itself are engraved to match the rest of the pistol.  The action on this double-action only British Pepperbox is in perfect "time"; and it is slightly heavy while still being smooth.  This was to ensure no accidental trigger pulls, much like today's double action revolvers.   If you have been looking for a classy, high-condition, top-quality antique Pepperbox for your collection or display, this British circa 1840's .40 caliber example would be an excellent choice.  We almost never see these with so much original finish left, much less on one that is in perfect mechanical condition like this one.
