Here we present an antique Sharps New Model 1859 Carbine, made circa 1859-1862, then converted to a shotgun sometime after the Civil War. Over 100,000 Sharps rifles and carbines were purchased and used by the federal government during the American Civil War. The most famous, single-shot percussion firearm used during the Civil War was the Sharps carbine, a .52 caliber breech-loading firearm invented and patented by Hartford native Christian Sharps. These powerful, accurate and reliable rifles certainly saw history from a firsthand perspective during the conflicts leading up to the Civil War, the war itself, and beyond on the frontier. They went on to experience some of the most exciting times in American history during the Indian Wars, the settling of the West, and the connecting of the coasts with the railroad.
This one has been there and done that and probably put many a bird or small mammal in the cookpot for the family.
The overall condition is good. The bore is semi-bright and smooth. The markings are all clear and legible. The action is strong.
