Description:
This is a very nice, all-original, and fully-functioning Double-Action 6-Barrel Pepperbox made by the Manhattan Firearms Company in Norwich, Connecticut. Introduced in 1856, the Manhattan Firearms Co. offered this double-action model in 3", 4", and 5" inch models, as well as in 3, 5, and 6 shot models, all in .28 caliber. The model was a success for the company and remained in production for 3 or 4 years, with approx. 2,550 to 3,000 total made across all the variations. This particular example is serial number 101, likely made in the first year of production in 1856. It is a 4" inch barrel, 6-shot model with factory engraving and smooth Walnut grips. It is a 100% matching gun with all of the serial-numbered parts matching, including the barrel cluster, receiver, main spring, trigger, hammer, sideplate, hand, and grips. This pepperbox has a very pleasing and even gray patina on all of the metal parts, typical of a carried piece that is over 160 years old. All of the factory markings are clean and legible, and the factory engraving is still fully intact. The bar-style hammer is marked on the left side with "Manhattan F.A. Mfg. Co. / New York" and the barrel cluster is stamped with "Cast Steel". The bores in all 6 barrels are excellent, and all 6 nipples are intact and in good condition. The original grips on this gun are in excellent condition, free from any cracks, chips, repairs, or major dings/damage. Both grip panels are perfectly fit to the gun and tight to the metal without any wiggle. As mentioned earlier, this Pepperbox is fully functional. The double-action operation is perfectly "in time" and the trigger breaks nicely with a medium-heavy pull. The hammer can be lowered between the nipples to allow for all 6 barrels to be loaded and carried safely.
