Here we present an antique Silver-Plated Remington New Model Army Revolver in .44 caliber, issued to a US soldier circa the mid-1860s. The New Model Army was manufactured from 1863 to 1875 with a total production of approximately 132,000 and represented the last of Remington's .44 caliber percussion revolvers. The Remington New Model Army represents the second-most number of issued handguns found on Civil War battlefields, second only to the Colt 1860 Army. The New Model Army was the primary revolver issued to Union cavalry after the fire at the Colt's factory in 1863. The Union government acquired a total of some 122,000 of these New Model revolvers for military use, with nearly 110,000 New Models purchased by the U.S. government during the Civil War, at a cost of around $11 each. The State of New Jersey also purchased several thousand for Civil War issue.
The New Model 1863 Army represents Remington’s highest production martial pistol. It featured a strong, solid-frame design with the groove in the top for a rear sight, as opposed to Colt’s open-top design. Though Colt got the lion’s share of the government contracts, many consider the Remington New Model Army the superior firearm. William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody used an ivory-handled New Model Army .44, serial number 73,293, from 1863 until 1906, when he gave it to his ranch foreman with a handwritten note which said that, "It never failed me”.
This particular revolver features US Ordnance inspectors’ marks throughout. It is a very sharp and clean gun. At some point after it left the factory, its owner had a fabulous silver finish put on. This was almost certainly after it left official service and was either kept by a discharged soldier, sold on the surplus market in the 1870s, or perhaps even taken from its original user. The silver is in great shape and the revolver comes in a period open-top holster. The holster is hand-tooled front and back with stitching to join the two edges and a rivet by the trigger guard. The back has a wide belt loop marked “44” and a slot at the bottom for a leather thong by which to tie the gun down to the leg, a classic gunfighter type of set up. The stitching has come apart but the leather is still in good shape.
The overall condition is very fine. 92% of the old silver plate remains. The markings are clear. The numbers match. The walnut grips are smooth and dark and whole. The bore is in very good condition with sharp rifling. The action is excellent, strong and crisp. Here is one you do not want to miss. An old Army revolver with a period silver finish and a neat tooled leather holster!
