Description:

RARE Antique 1st Model COLT DRAGOON in .44 HENRY

Neat Companion for a Henry or Winchester 1866!

Here we present a unique antique Colt 1st Model Dragoon Revolver Converted to .44 Henry, originally made in .44 percussion in 1849 in Hartford, Connecticut. The Colt Dragoon hardly needs an introduction. It was the refined predecessor to the Colt Walker and was a horse pistol in every sense of the word. Weighing over 4 lbs. you would definitely want a horse to carry it for you. It was also designed to be able to take down man or beast on the battlefield. Though it was not Colt’s best seller, it has become one of the most iconic of the Colt pistols. Only about 7,000 of this variant was ever produced. Many were used in the American Civil War, though the Union would adopt the much smaller Colt 1860 Army, a much-streamlined version with the same .44 caliber firepower.

This one is “US” marked on the frame. It features the earlier square-backed trigger guard as opposed to the later rounded version. These 1st models are scarce, but this one is even more unique due to its having been converted to .44 Henry by a period gunsmith. This would have made a great companion sidearm to a Henry or Winchester Model 1866. Someone liked this gun enough to have it converted for continued use. This was the precursor to the Colt Single Action Army Revolvers that would come in the early-to-mid 1870s.

The overall condition is good. The iron surfaces are dark with age. The markings are mostly clear. The numbers match with the exception of the unnumbered barrel wedge. The grips are in good shape with the handling marks you would expect. The bore is in very good shape with strong rifling. The action is strong.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 7-1/2 inches.

Caliber: .44 Henry
