This is the one gun i wish could talk. This carbine is rumored to have belonged to Texas Ranger Captain John Hughes. It was purchased from an old gun collector that said he bought it back in the mid 1980's in Round Rock, Texas. He said it was thought the carbine in the picture shown in this add being held by John Hughes, is this carbine. If you look close you will see it has the saddle ring ground off like this one. According to the Cody letter this gun was shipped in January of 1891 and the picture was suposedly taken in the spring of 1891 or 1892. No proof is known to exist at this time to prove the rumor that this gun did belong to John Hughes. With that said, this is a fine example of an early winchester 1886 carbine. Most of the blue on the barrel and magazine has turned to a nice brown patina. A very small amount of case color can still be seen on the receiver. And again the saddle ring has been ground off, apparently a long time ago. The bore has some very light pitting. This gun comes with an excellent full correct box of 40-65 WCF cartridges that was made in the late 1890's and also a Winchester Letter. Even without any documented history this is a nice collectable 1886 carbine.
