Description:
We are having a heck of time figuring out just exactly what we have here.  It is a large cavalry-style officer's flintlock pistol 15" inches long overall with a 8" inch smoothbore barrel that measures .71 caliber with no sights.  The barrel is stamped with a Belgian Liege oval proof with ELG over a small crown.  There are 3 additional small crowns over "LF" or "LT" visible on either side of the barrel just ahead of the tang, and one hidden by the lock behind the flash-hole.  The underside of the barrel is stamped with "18" or "1.8", a star over an "F", and a monogram we can't quite make out along with some other small unlegible markings.  This smoothbore pistol has a full-length stock with brass hardware including a lanyard loop on the butt.  The lock is stamped with "Mre. Rle. de St. Etienne" which is French from what we have been able to find.  We have no idea how a French lock and Belgian barrel ended up together on one pistol but the end result is a very nice looking antique large-bore flintlock cavalry pistol.  This pistol has been cleaned and polished at some point in the last 20 years or so so all of the brass and metal are bright.  The lock functions and has both the half-cock and full-cock notches intact and the trigger works, although if you let it down slowly it wants to catch on the half-cock notch.  The stock itself is pretty solid with only one small crack on the left side of the stock just ahead of the rear action screw (close-up picture provided), and an old repair on right side between the pan and barrel band.  All of the old brass hardware is intact and tight, all of the screws appear to be original hand-made pieces with good slots and threads, and the lock is nicely fit to the stock and solid.  This antique Belgian / French flintlock Officer's Cavalry Pistol would be a great addition to any antique arms collection and would make an excellent display piece/decorator.  As an antique it can be shipped directly to the buyer, no FFL needed.
