“TEX 9” SHARPS & HANKINS Short CAVALRY Carbine
Rare Model & Unit Marked Civil War Carbine!
Here we present an antique Sharps and Hankins Model Short Cavalry Carbine manufactured circa 1863 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with “TEX 9” Marking. This is one of approximately 1,000 Sharps & Hankins Model 1862 Cavalry Carbines manufactured from 1862 to 1865. One of the units issued these carbines was the 11th New York Infantry. This carbine has graffiti markings on the left side of the stock and the bottom frame tang showing “TEX 9”, referring to the 9th Texas Cavalry, which was very active throughout the duration of the Civil War. It is extremely plausible that these two units would have met and fought in the Spring & Summer of 1864 as both units were operating in Louisiana and Mississippi.
This carbine was efficiently though primitively customized during its period of use. The most noticeable change is the heel of the stock has been raised and a different butt plate installed to fit over the modification. The other is the rear sight, which has been traded for a simpler notch. As stated above, the left side of the wrist and the bottom tang have each been marked “TEX 9”.
The overall condition is very good. The iron parts have an even plum patina. The markings are mostly legible. The walnut stock is in good shape and is solid. The bore is in great shape with strong rifling. The action is excellent.
