In the 1830s, many commercial armsmakers received contracts to supply muskets to local militia units. While having no standard design, many of the long arms were generally patterned after British Military muskets but were normally of a lighter design. This smoothbore musket was made by Alvin Pratt of Sutton, Massachusetts. Though not one of the primary contractors, Pratt is believed to be the maker of these militia muskets for the United States under the contract to independent makers of 1808. In addition, Lane & Read out of Boston were also known to provide locks for militia muskets and make the complete muskets at this same time, which was between 1826 and 1836. While there are no markings other than Pratt along with Lane & Read, this has the characteristics that would lead one to believe it is a Massachusetts Militia musket. The overall condition is good+. The action is strong. The bore is in good shape. “A. PRATT” is marked on the barrel top. “8/2” is stamped on the barrel near the breech. This example showcases floral engraved lock that read, “LANE & READ/BOSTON”. The stock is stable. Here is a great piece foe the collection to display! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 38-1/4 inches. Caliber: .62 Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
