Lock marked, “1863” left of hammer with “Eagle Motif over U.S./SPRINGFIELD” marked forward of hammer. Nipple bolster bears correct Eagle Motif. Top of barrel marked, “1863” with “V/P/Eagle Head” marked on left side at breech. Buttplate tang is marked, “U.S.” with left side of stock marked “23”, likely rack number at armory. Type I two leaf folding rear sight with correct Tulip shaped end ramrod with straight type shank. All parts appear to be Springfield factory original & believe this Musket was produced in late 1863 during the transitional phase from the Type I to Type II muskets. During this transition the Type I adjustable barrel bands we’re replaced by solid bands and retention springs. This rifle has the standard Type I open end bands and the Type II retention springs. Overall good condition, with crisp markings. Barrel shows a pleasant gray/brown patina throughout with some scattered pitting on top of breech while lockplate shows a lighter gray patina with little to no original case colors remaining. Stock is very good with typical scattered use marks with a small chip on left side at breech. A solid example of the Springfield M1863 Type I Musket that no doubt played an important role towards the end of the conflict. Big Iron Firearms & Collectibles is a family owned & operated business.
