Description: Serial #147870, 9mm Browning Long, 5" barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is one of the 1,000 Webley Model 1922 Military & Police pistols ordered by the Union of South Africa Defence Force in 1925. The metal retains 97-98% of a Webley commercial blue finish that has left the edges, as well as the Webley commercial markings on the left of the slide, and the “U (Broad Arrow)" South African property marking on the right side of the slide crisp and clear. There is bright silvering along the high and exposed edges, as well as traces of original straw color remaining, mainly on the safety lever on the left side. The checkered Vulcanite grips are in fine condition with only light handling marks and flattening of the points, and the original magazine is scratch-numbered to the gun: “870". These pistols were adopted over the 9mm Luger due to cost restraints, and as a result of South Africa being the sole adopter at the time, Webley redesignated the pistol the “South African Model". Following this, a small number were purchased by the government of Latvia. This is a splendid example of a very rare, mid-sized Webley semi-auto pistol, and would make a wonderful addition to any collection.
