RARE .28 Cal. Antique JOSIAH ELLS Pittsburgh Bar Hammer PERCUSSION Revolver
1 of 625 Made; FIRST MODEL Engraved Antebellum
Here we present an engraved antique First Model Josiah Ells Patent Bar Hammer Percussion Revolver, made in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania circa 1857-59 with a total production run of only 625 revolvers. This percussion Bar Hammer revolver marked Josiah Ells entry into the pistol-making business in early 1857. The First Model revolvers were all chambered in .28 caliber offered in either 2-1/2 or 3 inch barrels with an “open top” frame. The cylinders were offered in 5 or 6 shots.
The marking on the left side of the bar hammer reads “ELLS/PATENT” with patent dates on the right. These little revolvers are extremely rare with so few being made.
The overall condition is good. The action remains functional with the only weakness being the trigger return spring. The bore is dark. Bot grips are firm with expected handling wear. Both sides of the frame and cylinder are lightly engraved with floral design. This is a rare little revolver
