Description:
This is a very handsome National Postal Meter M1 carbine that falls in the 3rd serial number block and was manufactured in the November 1943 to June 1944 time frame. It is unique in that it has a receiver made by Union Switch & Signal for National Postal Meter, identified by the "U" stamped below the serial number at the rear of the receiver.  NPM was having trouble making enough receivers to keep up with production so Union Switch & Signal (well known wartime 1911A1 producer) starting making receivers for them under a sub-contract.  Union Switch & signal made approx. 50,000 of these receivers total for National Postal Meter and surviving examples are quite scarce.  Given the time frame in which this carbine was made, it likely saw a good bit of service in WW2.  Sometime after WW2 or during the Korean War this carbine went thru the U.S. Arsenal overhaul and inspection program. It managed to go thru this with most of the original parts intact.  The only parts that were changed/updated on this carbine are the type 3 barrel band with bayonet lug, the front sight was swapped, the rear sight was probably changed to an adjustable Type 3 (this late in production it is possible the adjustable rear sight is original), the hammer spring was changed to a 26 coil, and the mag release and safety were updated to newer versions.  The barrel, bolt assembly, trigger housing, trigger, hammer, sear, op rod, and stock set were all left alone and are the original parts from the factory.  The original parkerized factory finish was left alone, as was the original blue finish on the bolt.  As you can see from the pictures, the finish on this carbine is in excellent condition overall.  The parkerizing is a handsome green-gray and shows only minor wear and handling marks, while the blue finish on the bolt is bright and clean with only some high-edge wear.  The bore in the factory-original Underwood 10-43 dated barrel is very good, mirror-bright with well-defined rifling throughout the barrel.  All of the factory markings and subcontractor markings on the small parts are crisp and clean.  The original "Trimble Tn" marked stock set is also in excellent condition overall, free from any cracks, chips, repairs, or major damage. The wood shows lots of small handling marks but has no bad spots or eyesores.  The original boxed "NPM FJA" cartouche from the factory inspection is still visible on the right side of the butt, as-is the U.S. Ordnance wheel cartouche next to it.  The slingwell is nicely marked "Trimble TN" and the underside of the handguard is stamped with a "TN", both proper for this National Postal Meter M1 Carbine.  The left side of the stock is stamped with the arsenal marking of "AAN" for Anniston Arsenal where the re-work was completed and there is a "P" stamped on the face of the pistol grip showing the work was completed.  The action on this carbine is smooth and precise without any slop in it.  It locks into battery perfectly and all of the controls on the gun are in perfect working order.  This M1 Carbine is in perfect working order and should shoot just as reliably and accurate as the day it first left the factory during WW2.  It comes complete with one original and correct 15rd magazine for a National Postal Meter stamped "MN" (made by Mattatuck Mfg. Co. for National Postal Meter).  If you have been looking for a unique and scarce U.S. M1 Carbine for your collection this National Postal Meter with a Union Switch & Signal-sourced receiver would be a superb choice.
