Description:
NEW YORK CITY Antique DAVID LURCH Germanic JAEGER Rifle Double Set Triggers

.40 Caliber Octagonal Barrel, 1860s!

Here we present an antique David Lurch Full-Stock Percussion Jaeger Long Rifle, made circa the 1860s in New York City, New York. David was a gunsmith who immigrated to the US from Germany. He worked with his brother Joseph Lurch for at least part of his career. David was active in his trade as a gunsmith at 142 Grand St. as well as 157 Grand St. circa 1863 to 1889. They made firearms as well as air rifles and gallery or saloon guns. Both brothers were also officers in their adopted state’s National Guard unit, the 11th Infantry Regiment. Civil War draft registration records show that David was 25 years old in 1863, putting his birth year around 1838. The page also shows him to have been born in Germany and working as a gunsmith. Another document shows that by April of 1874 he had achieved the rank of First Lieutenant.

This rifle would have been very handy in length, weight, and capabilities. It would have served multiple purposes well, from hunting, to defending the homestead, to militia duties or even staying sharp on the range. The Germanic Jaeger styling shows Lurch’s heritage.  The octagonal barrel is in .40 caliber and has a bead style blade front sight, adjustable notch rear sight, and "DAVID LURCH 157 GRAND ST NEW YORK" on top of the breech section. It also has "29" on the muzzle and inside the patch box lid, "5" on the base of the front sight, back action lock, double set triggers, horn forend cap, brass furniture, sling swivels on the forend and front of the trigger guard, checkered wrist, and a German silver star on the cheek piece.

The overall condition is fine. The action is strong and tight. The bore is in very good shape with sharp rifling. The stock and furniture are solid and stable. This is a fantastic rifle that remains solid and very well-equipped for the field!
