With government contracts totaling 30,362 in 1859 and 1860, the Smith Carbine was widely used throughout the Civil War, and was issued as the standard Cavalry long-arm to the following units: 1st Connecticut Cavalry Regiment 7th Illinois Cavalry Regiment 11th Illinois Cavalry Regiment 1st Massachusetts Cavalry Regiment 10th New York Cavalry Regiment[5] 6th Ohio Cavalry Regiment 9th Ohio Cavalry Regiment 7th Pennsylvania Cavalry Regiment 17th Pennsylvania Cavalry Regiment 3rd West Virginia Cavalry Regiment 1st Alabama Cavalry Regiment (Union) Note these are all early numbered regiments. Unlike the popular Spencer Carbine, this model Carbine was issued very early in the war and even prior, and saw extensive use throughout the conflict from start to finish, across all five Aprils. *** Hundreds of the earliest of these carbines were also purchased under government contract in 1859 and issued to the Pony Express riders in April of 1860. Those specific carbines were pulled from deliveries after inspection and bear identical marks to those issued to Union Cavalry units. This example, being an extremely early Serial Number, would have been in the first delivery to the United States Government, and could easily have been among those delivered to either the Pony Express or to Union Cavalry units. $92 Shipping includes $40 shipping plus 2% of sales-price for insurance.
