Description:
1894 FACTORY 22" OCTAGON SHORT RIFLE, .30WCF, #415XXX, MADE 1908. The most common of the short rifles was the 20" version of which, according to a survey of the Model 1894 records, 2,980 were produced. The records show only 2,252 rifles were made with 22" barrels. In my experience, most of the extra lightweight short rifles have 22" barrels. This example is not a lightweight version having the standard octagon configuration. It also has the correct one inch shorter forearm (8 3/8") than the standard 26" barrel rifle. Overall condition is fine with the barrel showing deep lightly aged blue. the mag tube blue is mixing with some plum and there is a minor dent ahead of the magazine retaining band. the receiver is a mixture of very aged blue mixing plum and brown with no evidence of cleaning. There is good blue on the loading gate. The forend is basically sound with one chip at the left front by the top corner of the forend cap. The butt stock shows normal handling with a shallow chip at the upper tang/receiver juncture on the right side that is minor. Sights consist of a Marble Sheard marked blade/bead front with a buckhorn rear sight (needs the elevator bar only) that shows patent markings. The bore is bright and excellent. Most short rifles show hard use and often abuse. They were especially popular in the Southwest and Mexico. This is a very decent example with a more scarce barrel length than normally encountered.
