Description:
This special order Marlin 1888 may be the only one in existence according to the numbers in Col. Brophy's Marlin Firearms. He found that of the approximately 4,814 88's made there were only 1,776 in 38/40, 23 with a 1/2 octagon barrel, 78 with a 1/2 magazine, and only 25 with a 20" barrel. So statistically this is likely the only one ever made in this special configuration. The Cody letter states that it was shipped on June 20th, 1889 with the existing features.
It remains in good condition with a very shootable bore. The barrel blue shows signs of ware from being scabbard. The metal overall is a mix of fading blue and patina with apparent color added some time ago. It has period front and rear sights and an antique Lyman tang sight. The stocks are in quite good condition overall. The bore is very good for it's age with strong riflings and some black powder scarring but it was taken care of. This unique 1888 is in good condition compared to the typical 88's that I have come across and it presents very well. Please see the pictures and ask any questions you have.
